Evaluation Criteria

AP (Ferguson) or PA Scoliosis Image Criteria: All lumbar and thoracic vertebrae should be seen. Good collimation should be visible. Right or left markers visible but not in anatomy.

Lateral Scoliosis Image Criteria: All lumbar and thoracic vertebrae should be seen in as true lateral as possible. Good collimation should be visible. Right or left markers visible but not in anatomy.

Hows & Whys of Scoliosis Radiography

  • What is scoliosis?
    • Abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.
  • What does the lateral scoliosis image show?
    • Spondylolisthesis, kyphosis or lordosis.
  • What is  Spondylolisthesis?
    • Spondylolisthesis is the anterior displacement of one vertebra over another.
  • What is kyphosis?
    • Too much kyphotic curvature of the thoracic spine.
  • What is lordosis?
    • Too much lordotic curvature of the lumbar spine.
