Review
The course “AI in Education: Leveraging ChatGPT for Teaching” on Coursera.org from the University of Pennsylvania by Dr. Ethan Mollick offers a way to interact with ChatGPT with examples and guided directions. It features videos from Dr. Mollick that overview ways to incorporate ChatGPT in various classes, from high school to college. This course would enhance AI skills for beginners or intermediate users wanting to utilize ChatGPT in their classes. It progresses from simple instructions on how to use AI to more complicated actions, such as creating a tutor for students or creating a custom GPT (though this is only for users with paid subscriptions to ChatGPT). The course includes four modules that participants can work through at their own pace and maintain access to after completing the course.
The first module overviews the basics on using AI the classroom, the benefits of AI in educational spaces, and how to increase student engagement in courses through AI. Next, the second module increases learners’ skills by teaching educators how to effectively design and use prompts in AI. Continuing to increase learner knowledge of AI, the third module teaches participants how to use AI to craft assignments and build in scaffolding to larger course assignments. Last, the fourth module shows educators how they can create their own GPTs either for student use as tutors or instructor use as classroom assistants.
Users have two options: auditing the course for free or paying $29.99 for the course. Auditing the course allows you to watch the videos and view any resources but does not let you submit work or receive a grade. While auditing, you can still access and respond to discussions, but you will not receive feedback on your comments. Further, each unit includes a quiz. While auditing, you can view the quizzes but not take them. In addition, the paid option offers a certificate upon completion that can be added to your LinkedIn page and printed to use for proof of completion.
Overall, I would recommend this course to educators who are looking to incorporate AI into their classroom in a more substantial way, such as implementing AI tutors and using custom GPTs. Auditing the course gives you an economical way to access to materials and boost your use of ChatGPT in the classroom.
