5 Guiding Students with an Assignment Using AI

Description:

This activity has Communication students creating a speech using AI. The purpose of the activity is to teach students how to use effective prompts in AI and consider the ethical uses of AI. While the activity is focused on an impromptu celebratory speech, it could be altered to a short paper, sales pitch, speech topic related a specific class, or other assignment. If using as a paper, I would suggest having students share papers with other students to see if the paper effectively communicates the intended message of their prompt. The attached PowerPoint includes directions for the activity and instructors.

Instructions:

• First, you will have students attempt to create a wedding toast using AI.
• Next, you will discuss how to write effective prompts and have them redo the toast.
• Once they have an effective prompt, you will teach them how to refine outputs by communicating with their AI platform.
• After they have had time to refine their prompt, they will deliver the speech as is without changing any information.
• Last, you will lead them in a discussion considering how it felt to deliver a speech completely in AI and the ethical considerations of using AI output without any edits or alterations.
